Apply for First Grade
Please follow the steps below to apply for our First Grade class. If you are applying for multiple children, you only need to complete Step 1 (the online application form) once. If you are also submitting applications for students not in first grade, please consult the pages that describe Applying for Early Childhood, Applying for Grades 2-8 and Applying for High School to learn about the different required supplemental materials and interview processes.
With the goal of building a healthy class that will travel through Grades 1-8 together, First Grade readiness is determined through a developmental assessment by the early childhood teachers, our student care committee, and when possible, the rising first grade teacher. If you have questions about your student’s first grade readiness, please contact the Admissions office.
Complete and submit our online application by clicking below. You only need to fill out one application per family; the form will give you the option to submit information for multiple applicants.
Submit a $75 nonrefundable application fee per student applying. The fee may be paid online by credit card at the link below, or by mailing a check with the applicant’s name in the memo line to: Portland Waldorf School, Attn: Admissions, 2300 SE Harrison Street, Milwaukie OR 97222-7527
3. Supplemental Materials
If your child has already been in a school environment, please download and print our Grade 1 Confidential Teacher Recommendation form (below), and give it to your child’s teacher to complete and return directly to our office.
If PWS will be your child’s first school experience, there is no need to complete the form.
Please also submit any reports or documentation regarding assessments, evaluations, or accommodations your child has received. Please note that failure to provide this information in a complete and timely way may result in considerable delay or denial of admission.
4. Next Steps
After you have submitted the online application, application fee, and the confidential teacher evaluation, your application is complete and you can look forward to these next steps…
After we have received a complete application, one of our teachers will contact you to schedule a family interview. This meeting allows the teachers to become acquainted with your family and assess first grade readiness, and gives parents the opportunity to ask questions.
Following the family interview, our admissions office will notify your family of the admissions decision based on the application materials and meeting with the teachers.
If the student is accepted, our Business Office will contact you to complete the enrollment process through TADS (our online tuition & contract management service). At this point, you will also be notified of any tuition adjustment awards, if applicable.
