High School Ultimate: Oregon State Championships & YCC News

Update: Read about the PWS Ultimate team ranked the #15 team in the United States and about Wolfpack players at the 2023 YCC National Championships.

Portland Waldorf Wolfpack has much to celebrate this year. Our high school Ultimate team is unbeaten in the Portland All-City League, and finished 2nd in the entire state at last weekend’s 2022 Oregon State Championships in Eugene.

Our team is small but mighty. Most public schools we compete against have hundreds (even thousands) of high school students, and field teams with 15 - 25 athletes. PWHS’ Wolfpack has 11 players (on a good day!) and yet—through hard work, focus, and world-class coaching—we are gracious, ferocious competitors. We are also relatively young, with a majority of players in Grades 10 and 11. We’ll enter next season ranked #1 in Oregon.

PWHS has been building an incredible Ultimate program over the past decade. PWHS graduates have been selected for U.S. National teams, and drafted on professional Ultimate teams including Portland’s own AUDL club, Nitro.

Portland Waldorf School has an equally stellar record when it comes to sending high school athletes to the US Open & Youth Club Championship (YCC), held each August in Minnesota. Last year six Wolfpack players attended YCC; this year, every single member of our high school team has been selected to play at YCC. There is no greater compliment to our team’s skill and passion.

Ultimate Frisbee is a part of the Portland Waldorf experience: pick-up games at recess, school teams and summer leagues. We were so excited and proud to see PWS High School students on the field at the 2022 YCCs:

  • U17 Boys: Oliver P (Class of ’25)

  • U20 Mixed: Rowan C (’23), Ezra C (‘23), Matteo G (’23), Bee M (‘24), Emmett M (‘24)

  • U20 Boys: Bram A (’24), Roman C (’23), Jack N (‘24), Leo R (’23)

Special thanks to Wolfpack Ultimate coach Jay Cohen for his ongoing support and development of our PWS players. Jay has been instrumental in building a resilient, long-lasting program at PWS. Thanks, coach! This year we also had coaching support from pro players Jake and Jaycee (thanks!!) and all-around support from PWS Athletic Director Justice Rosales.
